PS4 vs. Xbox One: Sony May Defeat Microsoft Once and For All With HBO GO App
Sony's PlayStation has become an even bigger competition for Microsoft's Xbox with the addition of HBO GO.
Last night, Richard Plepler, HBO CEO, made the announcement at the first Buzzfeed Brews event in New York City, according to the PlayStation blog.
The blog reports that the app will first be available on PlayStation 3, and then on PlayStation 4.
"With the HBO GO app on your PlayStation system and an HBO subscription via your cable or satellite provider, you'll have unlimited, on-demand access to your favorite HBO shows," the blog said. "...HBO GO offers every episode of every season of the network's best shows. You can also enjoy hit movies, sports, documentaries, and comedy specials, as well as special behind-the-scenes extras."
Microsoft's video game system has had the HBO GO app since its Xbox 360, but the Xbox One was still revealed to be losing to the PS4 in the console war earlier this month.
Sony announced its staggering PS4 sales numbers at CES 2014. After its Nov. 15 North American release, and subsequent European and Australian Nov. 29 launch, 4.2 million units of the video game console were sold in 2013.
"The momentum of the PS4 system keeps getting stronger and we couldn't be more thrilled gamers worldwide are enjoying the incredibly immersive gaming experiences along with deep social capabilities and entertainment provided by our network," Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., said.
Meanwhile, Microsoft announced that it sold over 3 million Xbox One video game consoles in 2013 since its Nov. 29 launch in 13 different countries.
"It's been incredible to see Xbox One selling at a record-setting pace for Xbox, and we were honored to see Xbox One become the fastest-selling console in the U.S. during our launch month in November," Yusuf Mehdi, Corporate Vice President of Marketing, Strategy and Business, Xbox, said.
At $399, the PlayStation 4 is $100 cheaper than the Xbox One.
