Some fans anticipating the Man of Steel sequel were shocked this weekend when Jesse Eisenberg was cast as Lex Luthor instead of rumored actors Bryan Cranston or Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Despite the casting curveball, it is too early to count The Rock out of the DC Universe yet. Johnson is still under speculation to appear in the film, also known as Batman vs. Superman, but as Green Lantern instead.

The Rock has been dropping hints that he will play some DC comic book character this year. The Fast & Furious 6 actor has been shouting out the Green Lantern on social media, sending comic book fans into a frenzy.

About three months ago, the WWE star uploaded a picture onto his Instagram page with a very interesting hashtag.

"#JohnStewartCanStillWhupSupermansAss," the photo's caption said.

Media picked up on this suspiciously green post and started speculating as to whether or not the actor would put on the green jumpsuit for Batman vs. Superman. Yesterday, Johnson addressed these rumors.

"@IGN: Did @TheRock reveal that he's playing John Stewart/Green Lantern?" a fan tweeted with a link to an IGN article discussing the possibility.

"All I said was.. #LanternCanWhupSuperman," The Rock responded via Twitter.

Back in January, Johnson revealed that he was working with DC Comics for an unidentified 2014 project.

"We just had a big meeting w/ Warner Bros CEO re: @DCComics 2014 we will partner up and create the cool bad assery. #RockTalk@ActionTilson," he tweeted.

In April, The Rock even teased the idea of playing Green Lantern.

"Funny U say that...TY: @krystal_burt: @ron2smoove I could see Rock playing in DC movies. Gravedigger or John Stewart (JL's Green Lantern.)," he said.

It is worth noting that The Rock's strong, dark look coincides with the Green Lantern from Cartoon Network's Justice League, which ran from 2001-2004, so the casting would not be the biggest stretch.

The Man of Steel sequel premieres May 6, 2016. Confirmed stars include Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth.
