'Divergent' News Update: Last Two Films Get New Titles
Summit Entertainment has announced the titles for the next two "Divergent" films.
In a press release, the studio announced that the third film will be called "The Divergent Series: Allegiant" and the fourth installment will be named "The Divergent Series: Ascendant."
Previously, the films were titled "The Divergent Series: Allegiant -- Part 1" and "The Divergent Series: Allegiant -- Part 2."
Both movies are based on the third book by Veronica Roth titled "Allegiant." A year ago, Summit announced it would divide the last book into two movies just like Lionsgate did with "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay." It also follows the Twilight series and Harry Potter, which were the first series to do so.
The trend has been successful for most franchises, but last year "Mockingjay" scored the worst box office gross for the series and also scored the worst reviews of the franchise. It will be interesting to see how much content the producers and director are able to put into the film.
"Allegiant" comes out a year after "Insurgent," which scored mixed reviews, and made $130 million at the box office domestically and $295 million worldwide. The gross in the US was less than the original "Divergent," which made $150 million in 2014. However, that movie only made $288 million worldwide.
Summit and Lionsgate hope that the next two installments can continue making more internationally.
The "Divergent" series follows Tris (Shailene Woodley), who lives in an oppressive society where citizens are defined and categorized by personality type. Tris is a divergent, and as a result, she is an outcast who is being hunted.
The series stars Woodley, Naomi Watts, Theo James, Kate Winslet, Miles Teller, Zoe Kravitz, Jeff Daniels, Ansel Elgort and Octavia Spencer. The upcoming films will be directed by Robert Schwentke and will be written by Noah Oppenheim.
"Allegiant" is set for release on March 18, 2016, and "Ascendant" will be released a year later on March 24, 2017.
