“Fantastic Four” may be getting a sequel regardless of the fact that the reboot flopped.

Despite having been trashed by the critics and being a financial disaster, “Fantastic Four” writer and producer Simon Kinberg is starting to write the sequel.

The news comes as a surprise because 20th Century Fox lost over $100 million on the film and the director Josh Trank spoke out against the studio.

Kinberg, however, remained positive.

"I’m really focused on the next one. I was obviously disappointed," he said during the Toronto National Film Festival.

"I was most disappointed that fans didn’t like it. I care more about them than I do anyone else. But I haven’t done a full deep dive on it. Do I think it was unfairly treated? I don’t know."

Kinberg also addressed the lukewarm reactions and said, "I’ve been on plenty of happy movies that don’t turn out to be very good movies, I’ve been on a lot of unhappy, difficult sets that turn out to be great movies. There was a lot of attention on the process of making that movie. It’s hard, when you’re making a movie, movies are hard to make. It’s just the reality."

Kinberg is positive that the next film could be better and that the team will finally get the franchise rights. After all, Fox needs to maintain the property in good standing or Marvel will likely try and take back the franchise as it did with Spider-Man after “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” flopped and had backlash from fans.

Kinberg has been in charge of writing the last two X-Men movies, which are among the most revered and loved in the franchise. As result, there is still hope for the Fantastic Four.

Up to this point, all three Fantastic Four films have been panned by critics. However, both the 2005 and 2007 installments at least made over $130 million. The reboot made $55 million and only $160 million worldwide. It will be interesting how much Fox decides to invest in the upcoming installment if it actually happens.

It will also be interesting to see what director it hires and if Fox decides to hire another inexperienced director. Kinberg will likely return as the producer.

As of now Fox has the sequel to the reboot slated for June 9, 2017, and it will reportedly open alongside “World War Z 2.”
