'Captain Marvel' News Update: Could Ronda Rousey Get the Lead?
After a huge campaign for Ronda Rousey to take on the lead in the upcoming "Captain Marvel" movie, Marvel president Kevin Feige finally spoke about considering Rousey for the role.
Feige told IGN during an interview at Los Angeles' Hero Complex Gallery that he liked the support for Rousey, saying, "I love it. That happens occasionally, and I think that's a testament more to the strength of the characters."
He continued, "Going back to my early days at Marvel, there were always various people campaigning to be Wolverine. I guess that was pre-Twitter and pre-Internet days, but still for some reason would pop up in Wizard Magazine. Wizard Magazine would always have 'this person wants to play this role!' It's a testament to how great the characters are that it appeals to such a wide range of talented, talented people."
Rousey first showed her interest in the role on a Reddit AMA and later posted fan art of herself as the character to her Instagram. Her interest got many of her fans excited about the possibility of Rousey getting the role.
The MMA fighter and actress could definitely get the part, especially since Feige did not deny the rumors.
He said, "You look at the ways we've cast our films in the past and it's always about who's the best person to inhabit the character, whether that is an actor like Chris Hemsworth who bulks up, or a wrestler like Dave Bautista who played Drax who ends up being an amazing performer, an amazing actor and a clever and witty and pointed comedic actor."
Rousey definitely has the track record at this point for the role, given her film experience in "The Expendables 3," "Furious 7" and "Entourage." However, she has yet to land a leading role, and that could be a factor against her, since she is originally a MMA fighter.
While fellow fighter Dave Bautista was cast in "Guardians of the Galaxy," his role was not the lead, and his acting skills were not tested for the most part. It will be interesting to see if Marvel is willing to give Rousey a lead role.
Captain Marvel is one of Marvel's most popular female heroes. She has appeared in numerous comics and was created by Stan Lee in 1967. When it is eventually released, "Captain Marvel" will be the first female-led Marvel film.
"Captain Marvel" is due in theaters on Nov. 2, 2018.
