One thing Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is known for is grandstanding his popularity. In recent news reports, Trump claimed he turned down an invitation to appear on John Oliver's "Last Week Tonight" show on HBO. Now it appears the invitation was never sent to begin with.

To start you off, Trump recently took to his Twitter page and made a nasty comment about Oliver's show, which he claimed to have been invited to appear on.

"John Oliver had his people call to ask me to be on his very boring and low rated show. I said 'NO THANKS' Waste of time & energy!" Trump wrote on the tweet.

That was something John Oliver and his show producers could not just let go, considering they never actually invited him on the show. They fired back on their own Twitter page that gave Trump a little of the old "one-two knockout."

"A couple of points... 1. Yes, we have a boring show. 2. At no point did we invite Donald Trump to appear on it," the Tweet read.

But here's the thing: According to Salon and the millions of people who watch "Last Week Tonight With John Oliver," Oliver's show is not like a typical late night show. It does not rely on guests for it content. It is solely operated within Oliver's monologue and features news clips and other media that he references.

So Trump's assertion he was invited on to Oliver's show is without merit right out of the gate.

But, as always, Trump could not let the conversation die there. He did a phone-in appearance on Colin Cowherd's "The Herd" on Monday and responded to Oliver's tweet, which he learned about during the interview.

"I say, 'Hey, look, you asked me to be on the show, I said no.' Then he goes out and he goes, 'I wouldn't want him on the show.' Well, that's just a lie," Trump said.
