The "Fast and Furious" franchise is about to see a gigantic growth spurt over the next few years.

In addition to the upcoming trilogy that will be released, which is supposed to complete the sequels, there are also plans now to release a series of prequels and spinoffs to the franchise that will also involve series star Vin Diesel.

According to Deadline, the "Fast and Furious" has been so successful thus far for Universal that it is now in early talks with Diesel to start planning a series of films that will take place within the franchise's universe, but will be different in many ways.

First of all, the talks have a front and center dialogue around the proposed prequel franchise that will go back to the days before Dom (Diesel) met Brian O'Connor (Paul Walker) and show how the characters were developed before they came together in California as two bad*ss motorhead action heroes.

There are many different approaches that can be taken with this prequel proposal, with so many characters coming and going over the past seven films. But that also means that other stories can be picked up in the present.

That leads to the other portion of the proposed universe -- spinoffs. This is something that was most heavily utilized in the TV arena, but films over the past two decades have adapted to the style and put out successful projects.

The franchise saw quite a turnaround after the third film put out the lowest numbers. The 4th - 7th film sequels have put out huge domestic and international hauls at the box-office. The last film, "Furious 7," was the first to surpass the $1 billion mark with a worldwide return of $1.5 billion, according to Box Office Mojo.

There has been no word yet as to when these franchise films are slated for rollout, but it is a safe bet that they won't start until the final trilogy makes its theatrical run.
