Sony truly knows how to please the long-time fans. PlayStation 2 favorite "Max Payne" just might be re-released as a PlayStation 4 game soon, if a new listing is anything to go by.

According to a report from Polygon, "Max Payne" was spotted on the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) website for the PlayStation 4 platform. This suggests that the shooter video game just might be heading towards Sony's latest generation console for a re-release along with other PlayStation 2 games.

As expected by long-time players of the game, "Max Payne" was marked with an M rating for blood and violence.

The adult rating hasn't held the thrilling video game back though as it's a beloved classic even years after its initial release. "Max Payne" was originally launched back in 2001 for PC, followed quickly with ports for PlayStation 2, Xbox and Game Boy Advance. It was re-released in 2009 for Xbox 360 and again in 2012 for PlayStation 3.

Sony has continued to rival Microsoft with the PlayStation 2 emulator that allows players to experience old classics in the new PlayStation 4 console. After all, this old generation platform is the best-selling console in history, offering a massive collection of games to choose from.

According to a report from Game Planet, not only are the Star Wars classics ("Super Star Wars," "Star Wars: Racer Revenge," "Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter" and "Star Wars: Bounty Hunter") up for playing, but other games have also been confirmed. Among these PlayStation 2 classics are "Dark Cloud," "Grand Theft Auto 3," "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City," "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas," "Rogue Galaxy," "The Mark of Kri," "War of the Monsters" and "Twisted Metal: Black."

Players who enjoyed their PlayStation 2 experience on these games are likely to be psyched for its re-release as the PlayStation 4's PlayStation 2 emulator, which can run old titles at up-rendered 1080p along with providing new features like remote play, activity feeds, sharing and trophies.

A new report from Destructoid suggests that purchase of the PlayStation 2 games are required to play them on the latest platform as the description of the leaked Dark Cloud PlayStation 4 port video includes a note that read: "PS2 Classics and PS2-formatted discs are incompatible with the PS4 system."

This could put Xbox One's backward compatibility feature a bit ahead of Sony's version since players would be able to play their existing Xbox 360 games without having to buy them again. Still, there is no official word from Sony regarding this issue yet.
