Prometheus 2 Update! Sigourney Weaver will be joining the cast of the prequel-sequel Prometheus. It was announced this week.

At this point, it is certain that Weaver will be playing the iconic heroine character Ellen Ripley, from the first Oscar winning Alien back in 1979, and that she has continued to play throughout the Alien film franchise. The first Alien was directed by Ridley Scott, and written by Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett.

They are five things that we know now, that will be added to the five that we learned almost one-week ago. Firstly, Weaver's Ripley is coming back, so she will also be joining Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace, the question is how? FANGORIA reported that Ripley will be a clone. Stop the presses! Do not think about the third sequel, Alien Resurrection in 1997 directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet for a moment. Just let it sink in.

Secondly, besides Ripley returning, some characters from the previous Alien films might also return. It sounds like a great reunion. And it also sounds like a crowded cast, with Ripley, Alien alumni, and multiple Fassbender robots. Hopefully it will be as exciting as it sounds.

Thirdly, besides the reported multiple Fassbender robots that might be in the sequel, there have been new reports that the tentatively titled Prometheus 2 will have a time-travel element.

The fourth thing that we now know, is that the film has been fast-tracked for a 2015 release date; the previous release date was March 2016. Refinery29.com reported from a source close to the project, "The connection to the Alien franchise is getting the film fast-tracked, and the studio hopes to win back fans jaded by the tenuous connections in the first film." And, "Bringing on Weaver all but seals the deal." Weaver is the only other person the source confirmed, outside of Rapace and Fassbender.

This film is 20th Century Fox's top priority. Filming of Prometheus 2 will start in the fall, after Scott's Exodus: Gods and Kings is released on Dec. 12, 2014. We also know that Scott and Michael Green will be penning the sequel's script. And, Scott, along with Green, are also working on and writing the new Blade Runner film.

The fifth nugget of information that has been discovered, is that Weaver, 64, has increased her physical fitness regimen with trainer-to-the-stars Bill Carter, FANGORIA reported.

The anticipation of Weaver has reached a fever pitch. While Scott was filming Exodus, which also stars Weaver, she and Scott were having secretive production meetings about the project. FANGORIA reported from sources that "the studio did not want Weaver and Scott talking about it while near so many cameras and microphones, so they borrowed a boat from the film's spiritual adviser, and the two had all of their production meetings on international waters."

With Weaver on board the new Prometheus 2, it seems that the sequel will definitely be more "alien-y."
