Michelle Obama Rap Song With Jay Pharaoh Encouraging Kids to Go to College
First Lady Michelle Obama is showing off her rap skills in a new video featuring "Saturday Night Live" star Jay Pharoah that encourages kids to go to college.
On Wednesday, FLOTUS released a two-minute comedy video, titled "Go to College," that shows her spitting some serious rhymes in the name of higher education. In the two-minute video, which is powered by CollegeHumor, Mrs. Obama talks about her working-class upbringing in the Southside of Chicago while stressing the importance for young people to go to college in order to achieve their dreams.
"Southside Chicago, we all know, we had to do overtime every night to make it tomorrow," she raps. "And everyone could really make their dream true. Hey, kid listenin' in Michigan, that could be you!"
At other parts of the video, Obama is seen dancing on the White House lawn with Pharoah and busting out bars in a makeshift recording studio.
"If you wanna fly jets, you should go to college. Reach high and cash checks? Fill your head with knowledge," Obama rhymes with the comedian.
According to a statement issued by the Office of the First Lady, the music video aims to bring awareness to Mrs. Obama's Better Make Room campaign, which targets teens from 14 to 19 years old under her Reach Higher campaign.
"I want to honor and empower young people who are working hard in school and pursuing their dreams -- and I want to do it in a fresh and fun way," she said in a statement, according to Reuters.
Sam Reich, CollegeHumor's head of video, praised the first lady's rap performance, and even encouraged her to think about stepping into the music industry.
"I think the country will join me in saying, 'Mrs. Obama, we think you should cut an album,'" he said.
