Jennifer Hudson is eager to come back to "American Idol" for its last season.

With an Academy Award under her belt, three studio albums and a long list of movie roles, Hudson is quite arguably the most successful contestant to grace the "Idol" stage.

The singer discussed the possibility of returning to the reality competition series during an interview at the opening of her Broadway debut, "The Color Purple."

"I hope to return!" Hudson told E! Online. "I hope to be a part of the Idol finale, the final show. I'm kind of sad to see it go because it's been a part of our homes. Each of us in America, you know what I mean? So it's going to be sad to see it go but I hope to be a part of the farewell."

Hudson's wish could become a reality, as "American Idol" producer Nigel Lythgoe was one of the famous faces that attended her "The Color Purple" opening.

"Some of the 'Idol' family was in the audience tonight," Hudson said. "Nigel was there. I was like, Oh my God, there's so many people that helped build my career sitting in this audience tonight, which was kind of creepy and overwhelming but I was like, 'Ahh--I don't want to look at the audience.'"

Last month, Ryan Seacrest revealed to E! News the show's former judges, Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, and Simon Cowell, would return at some point during the show's last season.

"We will have the former judges back," he said. "The plan is to have all of them back. They've all considered it and I think are enthusiastic about coming back and saluting the show."

Hudson competed on "American Idol" back in 2004 but finished in seventh place.

The 15th and final season of "American Idol" will debut on Jan. 6, 2016.
