There are many ways to promote a film in today's digital age, but none quite so unique as the way "Independence Day: Resurgence" is going about it.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the film has officially released a new teaser trailer. It is basically a series of news reports that seems to be filmed in a documentary style of trailer. It details the War of 1996, which was when the first movie came out and took place. That was when Will Smith teamed up with Jeff Goldblum and took down the alien invaders, while heroically saving themselves in a race to exit the ship.

The day went down in the fictional universe as a global holiday and united the nations of the world against a common enemy.

The teaser- released for the film is actually more of a commercial style video to promote the new website, which is Warof1996.com

That website is where fans of the movie can get new information about the movie, which includes the fate of Smith's Steve Hiller character.

On the site, it details that he was killed during a test pilot operation for an alien spacecraft.

The headline for the story reads, "Alien Tech Malfunction Kills Col. Hiller."

It appears that Smith would be unavailable to film the movie, so Roland Emmerich had to find a way to write him out of the universe.

The news report from the fictional site detailed his fate.

"While test piloting the ESD's first alien hybrid fighter, an unknown malfunction causes the untimely death of Col. Hiller. Hiller's valor in the War of '96 made him a beloved global icon whose selfless assault against the alien mothership lead directly to the enemy's defeat. He is survived by his wife Jasmine and son Dylan."

Those returning to the sequel include Jeff Goldblum, Vivica A. Fox and Bill Pullman. Also starring in the film will be Jessie Usher, Liam Hemsworth, Maika Monroe, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Angelababy and Sela Ward.
