Leonardo DiCaprio Recalls Several Brushes With Death, Thinks He's Used up a Few Near Misses
Leonardo DiCaprio recalls being forced to endure several near-death experiences, including being aboard an aircraft that suffered through a malfunction.
In a probing Wired magazine profile the Hollywood A-lister also remembers coming face-to-face with a man-eating shark and having a serious scare stemming from skydiving mishap.
"If a cat has nine lives, I think I've used a few," he said.
Of the shark incident specifically, DiCaprio reminisced, "A great white jumped into my cage when I was diving in South Africa. Half its body was in the cage, and it was snapping at me."
The near aircraft catastrophe stemmed from an engine malfunction and came on a flight to Russia, ultimately requiring an emergency landing in New York.
"I was sitting there looking out at the wing, and the entire wing exploded in a fireball," he said.
Finally, there was DiCaprio's skydiving incident.
"It was a tandem dive," he said.
"We pulled the first chute. That was knotted up... He pulled the second, and that was knotted up too. He just kept shaking it and shaking it in midair, as all my friends were, you know, what felt like half a mile above me, and I'm plummeting toward earth. And he finally unravels it in midair."
The 41-year-old DiCaprio is widely considered one of Hollywood's biggest stars, having starred in such flicks as "This Boys Life," "What's Eating Gilbert Grape," "This Boy's Life," "Gangs of New York," "The Great Gatsby" and "Django Unchained."
DiCaprio was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" and won Golden Globes for his portrayal of Howard Hughes in "The Aviator" (Best Actor in a Drama) and as Jordan Belfort in "The Wolf of Wall Street (Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy).
DiCaprio has also famously dated the likes of Toni Garrn, Blake Lively, Bar Refaeli, Gisele Bundchen and Claire Danes.
