‘G.I. Joe’ Cinematic Universe In The Works? Films To Feature Toy Brands Micronauts, M.A.S.K. & More
In the new Hollywood landscape, the way to go is not with just one popular franchise but several teaming up in one cinematic production. Perfected by the juggernaut Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and followed closely by the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), the new trend will next be adapted by the "G.I. Joe" team who's said to be in talks of producing one massive film universe with fellow toy brands.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount Pictures and Hasbro are currently working together to create "an interconnected, cross-property onscreen universe" that features the characters of Hasbro's different brands including "G.I. Joe," "Micronauts," Visionairies, M.A.S.K. (Mobile Armored Strike Kommand) and ROM.
"G.I. Joe" has had two major films released with big names such as Channing Tatum, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Bruce Willis starring in it. According to a report from Cinema Blend, it's not clear if the extended universe will maintain continuity with the past movies.
The other brands have been featured less prominently so far, but mostly revolve around existing teams. "Micronauts" was a toy line in 1976 that got its own comic series a few years later, while "Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light" was even granted its own animated series. "M.A.S.K." is another series focused on an organization of heroes, and "ROM: SpaceKnight" stands out as a single character that's a cyborg fighting alien species.
It's unknown how the creators will find a way to weave all the storylines and characters together, but it's certainly one that viewers who enjoyed the toy brands will seek out. Allspark Pictures, which is Hasbro's film label, will be producing the film/s.
During the deal, Paramount Pictures chairman and CEO spoke about the shared vision and success of the studio and Hasbro.
"Paramount and Hasbro have had a longstanding relationship, and we're proud of the success we've enjoyed on the 'Transformers' and 'G.I. Joe' franchises," Grey said to The Hollywood Reporter. "We're excited to grow our agreement and make even more movies based upon these popular and powerful Hasbro characters and their worlds."
Hasbro chairman, president and CEO Brian Goldner chimed in with the potential of the universe saying, "Hasbro and Allspark Pictures put storytelling at the center of everything that we do. These brands are filled with memorable stories and vivid characters, and this universe creates a framework for how they will become interconnected. Extending our partnership with Paramount allows us to continue our long-term strategy and overall vision to build dynamic worlds for all of our brands, and we are thrilled to collaborate with them as we develop these properties."
