Michael Jordan has donated the proceeds from a multimillion dollar settlement he recently reached with two Chicago area supermarkets for illegally using his name to 23 local charities for children.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the NBA Hall of Famer's actions make good on his pledge to donate all the profits from the suit to an array of nonprofits chosen by him and his advisers.

A jury recently awarded the current Charlotte Bobcats owner $8.9 million stemming from his 2009 suit against Dominick's and Jewel-Osco over their illegal use of his name in a magazine advertisement congratulating him on his Hall of Fame induction.

While Jordan's adviser Estee Portnoy declined to reveal just how much each charity will receive, some of those earmarked for donations include After School Matters, Casa Central and the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

Reports are even after Jordan's legal team has been fully compensated for its six-year legal battle, millions are expected to be left to spread around among the selected organizations.

"I care deeply about the city of Chicago and have such incredible memories from my years there," Jordan said in a news release. "The 23 charities I've chosen to make donations to all support the health, education and well-being of the kids of Chicago. Chicago has given me so much and I want to give back to its kids - the city's future."

Jordan had long insisted his battle was not about money, but the right to protect the name and image he worked hard to cultivate for himself. He twice took the stand during the proceedings and offered intimate details on how he and his handlers came to reach some of the marketing decisions they famously have.

Portnoy added the staff had "a fun week" calling the recipients of Jordan's donations, which also included Chicago Scholars, Chicago Youth Programs, Children's Literacy Initiative, Christopher House, Common Threads, Erikson Institute, Gary Comer Youth Center, Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund - Illinois, KEEN Chicago, La Casa Norte, La Rabida Children's Hospital, Make-A-Wish Illinois, New Moms, New Teacher Center, The Ounce of Prevention Fund, Project Exploration, Rehabilitation of Chicago, Sinai Health System, SOS Children's Villages Illinois and Tutoring Chicago.
