Susan Komen Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer News: Scientist Boycott the Breast Cancer Foundation for Denying Link Between Bras and Cancer
The American Cancer Society and the Susan G. Komen Foundation have landed themselves in hot water due to their omission of a scientific discovery that could help the prevention of breast cancer.
According to at least five research studies and numerous healthcare providers, there may be a link between breast cancer and wearing constrictive bras for a long period time.
Research shows that bras, especially when worn for long periods of time, restrict the flow of lymphatic fluid and retain toxins in the breast. Overtime, the buildup of toxins and the restriction to the lymphatic fluid may cause cancer.
Medical anthropologists, Sydney Ross Singer and Soma Grismaijer compare the toxin buildup to feet and ankle swelling while on a plane for too long. As the bra restricts fluid movement, the lymphatic fluid pools in the lower extremities and isn't allowed to circulate, the Inquistir reports.
Singer and Grismaijer have also written a book, Dressed To Kill: The Link Between Breast Cancer and Bras, that further discusses the potentially fatal link. The book states that wearing a bra for more than 12 hours a day can dramatically increase the risk of breast cancer. Women who wear bras all day long, including bedtime, are 125 times more likely to develop breast cancer than women who rarely or never wear a bra.
The book also offers suggestions on how to lower your risk. By wearing less tight bras (ie: minimizing the use of sports bras) and not wearing bras to bed, a woman can reduce her risk to 1 in 152.
Despite this revelation, the Komen and ACS foundations have chosen to dismiss the bra-cancer discovery that has been brought to their attention for at least 20 years now.
As a way to boycott the noted cancer foundations, Singer and Grismaijer suggest that whenever ACS or the Komen foundation asks for a donation, "...send them your bra instead! This will give them the message, and help you prevent breast cancer at the same time."
