Boxing: What Do Floyd Mayweather, Muhammad Ali Have in Common? Mikey Garcia Explains
What do the undefeated fighter Floyd Mayweather Jr. and boxing great Muhammad Ali have in common?
Former champion Mikey Garcia explains on Fight Hype that both warriors have similarities, especially being great businessmen.
"Ali was the flamboyant, trash-talking...he was a trash talker...but he sold...he was a good promoter...Floyd did the same thing...he gets a lot of haters, but he also has a lot of followers," Garcia said.
For Garcia, if Ali can say he's "The Greatest," why can't Mayweather also call himself "The Best Ever?" As far as he had seen in Mayweather's fights, he is truly the best, Garcia states. The only problem now is the presence of social media where opinions about "The Money" get twisted and exaggerated, leading for several people to hate him.
Yet, Garcia admits that he never really watched a full fight of Ali's.
In August, in an ESPN Deportes interview, Mayweather picked himself as the best fighter of all time, ranking above Robert Duran, Pernell Whitaker, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. and Muhammad Ali, Fight Hype reported.
He explained that he deserved to be on the top spot because he defeated "more world champions than any other fighter" and accomplished it "in a shorter period of time than any other fighter." Furthermore, he reasoned that he made it with "less fights than any fighter."
The five-division world champion also cited "record breaking numbers all around the board in pay-per-view and live gate" as another reason.
Mayweather was criticized about his list, more specifically by putting himself before Ali. Ali's Twitter account even reacted.

Yahoo! Sports notes that both fighters, in fact, have some common qualities like being Olympic medalists -- Ali won gold in Rome in 1960 while Mayweather won bronze in Atlanta in 1996 -- and prominent boxing fighters. They are also both clever and have great rapport with the media.
However, other than that, Ali's influence on society is said to be much greater. The site noted that Time named him as the only athlete on its 20 most influential Americans in history in 2012. Prior to that, he got the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor a civilian can receive, from President George W. Bush in 2005. In his prime years of 25 to 28, he was denied of a boxing license due to his objection to join the armed forces, Time informed. He strongly opposed the Vietnam War because of his religious beliefs.
