Dolph Ziggler is one of the most popular superstars in the WWE today, but the creative team has done nothing to elevate his status despite being one of the most talented wrestlers in the roster. Ziggler may be undergoing a major change and turn heel sooner than later.

According to TInquisitr, "The Showoff" demonstrated heel qualities in the latest episode of SmackDown last Thursday. He faced off with Kevin Owens after being attacked by him in this week's episode of RAW while challenging Dean Ambrose for the intercontinental championship.

Ziggler won by disqualification after Ambrose attacked Owens and made the save as he was about to perform a powerbomb to the four-time intercontinental champion onto the steel steps. Ziggler was helped to his feet by a few referees before Owens gave him a Super Kick while being brought to the back.

"The Lunatic Fringe" chased off Owens but turned around and got hit by a Super Kick from Ziggler. It is an uncommon scenario for a face like Ziggler to attack another fan favorite in Ambrose. But it is obvious that these three superstars will be involved in a feud for the intercontinental championship entering the Royal Rumble.

Inquisitr noted that it is a welcome sight to have Ziggler turn heel after a very stale year. He was involved in a terrible love storyline with Lana, Summer Rae and Rusev. His next feud with Tyler Breeze had a potential but the WWE did not have any idea on how to make the story better.

The former World champion was also rumored to turn heel against John Cena last October and win the United States title. The plans changed and Alberto Del Rio won the US championship while Ziggler started the feud with Summer Rae and Breeze.

The reported reason for the heel turn involves attacking Cena as he has the U.S. title and Nikki Bella, per What Culture. In the Season 4 finale of "Total Divas," Ziggler confessed that he is still in love with Nikki but she is in a relationship with the 15-time WWE champion.

Season 5 will premiere on Jan. 19, 2016 and the story between Nikki and Dolph will continue. The season synopsis by WWE.com read: "Brie has to contemplate her next career and life move, while Nikki wrestles with coming clean to her boyfriend, WWE Superstar John Cena, about the romantic advances made towards her by her ex-boyfriend, Dolph Ziggler. This love triangle puts John and Nikki's relationship to the test."
