The Miss Universe pageant created buzz on social media on Sunday, after the wrong contestant was announced as the winner.

The organization crowned a new reigning queen, but the live pageant was not without controversy, leading it to trend on Twitter.

Beauty queens from all over the world gathered in Las Vegas to show off their good looks, strut across the stage in a variety of ball gowns, walk in swimwear, and tackle the dreaded question and answer portion, all for the crown of Miss Universe 2015.

Before the night even began, there was already some controversy surrounding contestant Miss Puerto Rico Destiny Vélez. Vélez was disqualified prior to the show due to her insensitive comments about Muslims, causing her own fair share of Twitter backlash, reported CNN.

After Miss USA Olivia Jordan, Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutiérrez and Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach were named the top three finalists, each beauty queen took a final walk before getting the results. That's when things took a dramatic turn.

Miss USA was named the second runner-up, host Steve Harvey announced Miss Colombia as the new reigning Miss Universe.

The beauty queen was crowned by reigning Miss Universe 2014, Paulina Vega, and took her victory walk.

However, Harvey walked out on stage and apologetically announced that he had mistakenly called Colombia instead of Miss Philippines, who was the actual winner and Miss Universe 2015.

Two hours after the error, the Miss Universe organization released a statement on their Instagram account.

"The excitement of live TV was evident tonight on The Miss Universe stage with over 10 million live fan votes tabulated. Unfortunately, a live telecast means that human error can come into play. We witnessed that tonight when the wrong winner was initially announced. Our sincerest apologies to Miss Universe Colombia, Miss Universe Philippines, their families and fans. We congratulate Miss Universe Philippines as Miss Universe 2015," the statement read.

Twitter, however, did not take the mistake so calmly. Fans of the beauty queens and viewers alike took to social media to poke fun at the situation, reveal their embarrassment for the beauty queens and commemorate the embarrassing ordeal in memes.

Some were just downright shocked and embarrassed for Miss Colombia, Miss Philippines and even Harvey.

Others just took the opportunity to poke fun at the whole ordeal, starting a few memes.

A few celebs also chimed in on what could now be deemed the most embarrassing moment of 2015 on television.

And of course, the former owner of the pageant organization, Donald Trump, also managed to insert himself into the conversation.

Hollywood's most famous Colombian, actress Sofía Vergara, shared her support for Miss Colombia on Instagram, saying she considered her the queen regardless of the mistake.
