'Harry Potter' Play Update: JK Rowling Speaks Up About Casting Black Actress as 'Hermione'
The highly anticipated "Harry Potter" stage play in London gained a lot of backlash from social media users after the author of the "Harry Potter" series, J.K. Rowling, announced that the character of Hermione Granger in the play will be performed by a black actress.
Many users said that Rowling choosing actress Noma Dumezweni compared to the film series' actress played by Emma Watson was considered racist. It led to people saying how the books were discredited since it mentioned that Hermione had a "white face," RT reported.
The play, titled "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child," is expected to open by summer of 2016. It became controversial and had Rowling break his silence through social media.
"Canon: brown eyes, frizzy hair and very clever. White skin was never specified. Rowling loves black Hermione," she wrote on Twitter in defense of the backlash from other users claiming that the casting detracted the story's credibility.

Furthermore, one Twitter user even captured a snapshot of one part of the "The Prisoner of Azkaban" book, where it reads "white face." The said user wrote on Twitter, "white skin was never specified."

Meanwhile, some social media users, according to RT, urged that the issue was not racism but continuity since the play will be kicking off on the life of the characters when they grew up with their own families.
The 45-year-old actress who will play Hermione was born in Swaziland and moved to England as a child. In 2005, she earned an Olivier award for "A Raisin in the Sun."
Meanwhile, Variety revealed just how the story would play out in the two-part play next year. "While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted," the story reads according to the production notes quoted by the publication.
"As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places," it adds. Rowling, along with playwright Jack Thorne and director John Tiffany, will be joined by other cast members including Jamie Parker as Harry Potter and Paul Thornley as Ron Weasley.
"I'm so excited with the choice of casting for 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.' I can't wait to see Jamie, Noma and Paul bring the adult Harry, Hermione and Ron to life on stage next summer," Rowling said as quoted by the news agency.
"Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" will begin previews on June 7 and the opening performances of Part One and Part Two are scheduled on July 30.
