Sony PlayStation Partners With GoPro Channel to Feature Action Sports Video
PlayStation plans to soon make GoPro Channel action sports videos available on some of its latest consoles.
Venture Beat reports the channel will soon be available on PlayStation 4 and 3 systems. The publication adds that the development speaks volumes about the growing importance of outlets reaching consumers through alternative networks such as video game platforms.
PlayStation maker Sony now joins the likes of Amazon Fire TV, Roku, Comcast Watchable, Sky, Vessel Entertainment, Xbox, LG and Virgin America in making the GoPro Channel available on its network. GoPro is widely known for its assortment of extreme sports content and videos.
The deal with Sony, however, comes with perks, as it allows the company to feature "The 66rh Parallel Show" and "Iceland with Ben Brown" exclusively on its platform up until the end of the year.
"We want GoPro content and programming to be easily accessible on every platform where our millions of fans spend time," GoPro's director of distribution Jon Cohen said in a statement. "There's a sweet-spot of overlap between PlayStation's super-engaged audience and the GoPro audience and we're excited to welcome PlayStation to GoPro's expanding OTT family."
Sony users will now be allowed to stream GoPro content on-demand and browse the San Mateo, California-based company's cameras and accessories. The arrangement will also allow PlayStation owners the option of accessing all of their favorite videos, performing enhanced searches, browsing playlists, and discovering new videos.
In early premarket trading on Tuesday, GoPro stock jumped by 1.5 percent. Previously, the stock had tumbled 46 percent over the past three months, and 71 percent year to date, amid growing concerns over a lack of demand and growing competition within the industry.
The deal with Sony comes roughly 18 months after the company launched a similar app with rival Xbox One to equip many of its systems.
