Demi Lovato Vows to Tackle Country's Addiction Problem With Work for Facing Addiction Nonprofit
Demi Lovato has set her sights on tackling what she sees as "the biggest problem in our country."
The "Cool For Summer" singer has joined forces with the nonprofit Facing Addiction and is now actively campaigning to have fans "look closer" at the prevalence of addiction in America.
Having already conquered a drug addiction and spent time in a rehab facility receiving treatment for an eating disorder, the 23-year Lovato speaks from experience.
"I am one of the 1 in 7 people who has faced addiction, and I am grateful to be in recovery today," Yahoo reports she recently posted on social media. "It's time for us all to reflect, and start @facingaddiction. Let's stop ignoring the biggest problem in our country we often don't want to look at."
Lovato is just one of several big name celebs now working with Facing Addiction to help stem the tide of it. Model Tara Conner and comedian Gary Owen are also on board and, like Lovato, have shared stories of coming to deal with their own addictions.
"We all are connected to this issue one way or another and we all need to be part of the solution.," Lovato added. "Together we can replace shame with support, hope, and healing."
In recent times, Lovato has also given much of the credit for her recovery and sustained health to longtime boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama, adding she "really wouldn't be alive today without him."
Valderrama recently saluted his girlfriend for reaching her third year anniversary of sobriety, posting on Instagram how proud of her he was for her fighting to overcome all her struggles and pledging his devotion.
The two have now been dating for more than five years, commencing soon after she turned 18 and entered rehab for various issues.
People told him, 'You should probably leave. She's on a spiral, and you're going to be sucked down with it,'" Lovato recently told People magazine. "But he was like, 'I'm not leaving. This is somebody I really care about.'"
