50 Cent Sues Rick Ross for Using 'In Da Club' on 'Renzel Remixes'
50 Cent has taken his long-simmering feud with Rick Ross to a new level, suing the rapper for allegedly using his "In Da Club" classic as the background music for the new "Renzel Remixes" release.
TMZ reports 50, born Curtis Jackson, insists not only did Ross use his tune without proper permission, but he did so for the express purpose of drumming up more publicity for his next LP. Filed in Connecticut, the suit seeks unspecified damages.
The latest action comes on the heels of Jackson being ordered last summer to pay Ross' ex-girlfriend and the mother of his young child $7 million for once uploading a sex tape of her to the web without proper authorization.
In all, Jackson was ordered to pay $2 million in punitive damages, and $5 million for pain and suffering to Lastonia Leviston, who had been seeking $15 million.
Throughout the proceedings, attorneys for Jackson told the court he was worth less than $5 million and asked for leniency on his behalf. After the verdict was announced, his attorneys indicated they planned to appeal the decision and seek to significantly lower the amount he would be forced to pay out.
The 40-year-old Jackson formally filed for personal bankruptcy during the trial. Since then, he has placed his Connecticut mansion on the market and has twice dropped his asking price for the property.
Earlier this month, he announced the 50,000 square-foot Farmington home with 21 bedrooms and 25 baths is now being offered at $8.5 million, down some $10 million from his original asking price of $18.5 million.
Leviston and Ross had a child together in 2009. Though the sex video featured a man other than Ross, Leviston's attorneys told the jury Jackson released the tape in order to humiliate his rival.
