Emmy organizers have announced that on its 66th Primetime Emmy Awards on Aug. 25, 2014, there will be a live coast-to-coast telecast via NBC at the Nokia Theatre in L.A. The schedule is three weeks earlier than its usual schedule, and according to sources from NBC the change from the original schedule of Sunday to Monday was due to the possibility that there could be an early Sunday Night Football game. The hosts of the show as well as the team who will run the production have yet to be announced.

Aside from the dates, the Emmys also announced that there would be changes in the categories included for the awards night. The first one includes the separation of the outstanding miniseries and movie program category. With the increase in the number of programs for both movie and miniseries in the last 3 years, this change was deemed necessary. There will also be a separation in the outstanding reality program category. Now, the categories include Outstanding Structured Reality Program and Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program. The Voice-Over category will also be divided into Outstanding Narrator and Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance categories. The 2 percent rule for outstanding comedy and drama series categories will also be implemented. This means that a comedy or drama series with total first-round votes of 2 percent will get a nomination.

For the best drama series category, Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones are most likely going to dominate the competition. Mad Men has started to fade in the last couple of years with no wins despite 29 nominations. Downton Abbey will also not pose a huge threat since its new season has been deemed as poor and will most likely end up just as a nominee. For the best actor in a drama series category, Bryan Cranston of Breaking Bad and John Hamm of Mad Men are expected to dominate, while Kerry Washington of Scandal is expected to lead the Best Actress Category.
