Julio Cesar Chavez Jr's Next Fight Could Be Against Badou Jack, James DeGale
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is aching to become a world champion again and he will likely get a shot, as he is continuously being linked to middleweight champions Badou Jack and James DeGale.
Chavez successfully bounced back from his disastrous defeat to Andrzej Fonfara in April. The former world champion ran away with a unanimous decision win against Marcos Reyes during their 10-round showdown in Texas in July.
Chavez, who owns a 49-2-1 record with 32 knockout wins, suffered a hand injury during his victory against Reyes, but the Sinaloa, Mexico native said that he is ready to return to training anytime soon.
"It was a great year," Chavez said of his 2015 performances. "After returning I lost to Fonfara at light heavyweight. He was tough, strong and I came back from a long layoff. Then I beat Reyes but I hurt my hand. I'm happy with the team and I have done well economically."
Now that he is back on track, Chavez said that he is looking forward to getting a title shot early next year. He revealed that his priority is facing Jack, who is the reigning World Boxing Council super middleweight champion.
Chavez added that he is aiming to become the first Mexican to win a 168-pound world title and he feels that he knows that it takes to reach his goal after learning from his previous mistakes.
"It could done in the month of March or April," Chavez said of his possible title fight against Jack. "I'm mature and willing to offer the best version Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. I know what I want and need, I'll focus on that. With the years that I have remaining in boxing, I'm going to give my best."
But if he does not get the bout against Jack, Chavez said that he will also strongly consider a fight with DeGale, who currently holds the International Boxing Federation super middleweight title.
"Jack remains as the first choice, he's a very good option. But if there is a fight with DeGale, it's a big fight, he is a good champion, and whichever of the two I'd welcome because it's a fight for the world championship," Chavez told ESPN Deportes via BoxingScene.
However, there is a chance he might not get a shot against Jack and DeGale early next year. BoxingScene reported that Jack, who holds a 20-1-1 record with 12 knockouts, is more open to facing DeGale in a title unification bout instead of defending his title against Chavez.
