Soccer: Neymar Wants Contract Extension, But Brazilian Star Could Leave FC Barcelona
Brazilian talisman Neymar is looking to sign a contract extension with FC Barcelona but the star forward also hinted that he is open to leaving Camp Nou.
Neymar, who is playing in his third season at Camp Nou after moving from Santos in May 2013, has yet to sign a new deal with Barca, but the 23-year-old revealed that they are in talks with the Spanish La Liga club.
"We're talking about a renewal right now," Neymar confirmed to AS via ESPN FC.
Neymar also added that he is optimistic a deal will be struck soon, but the Brazilian superstar is still continuously being linked to a possible transfer next year.
ESPN reported that Manchester City are very interested in acquiring Neymar from Barcelona, especially if they will be able to secure the services of former FC Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola next summer. Recent reports indicated that Guardiola is a shoe-in for the Manchester City job next summer.
Neymar confirmed that he has heard about the talks about the possibility of moving to Manchester City, but he denied that he is pushing for a reunion with Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium.
However, Neymar admitted that he will not rule out a move away from Camp Nou. "I don't know, life is long," said Neymar, who also did not deny the chance of immediate exit if he fails to get a new deal from Barca.
Aside from Manchester City, Neymar is also being linked to several top-tier clubs. Neymar Sr. confirmed earlier this year that Manchester United were willing to spend £240 million for the buyout clause and contract. However, Neymar Sr. said that he got an assurance from FC Barcelona that they will not accept Manchester United's offer.
"Barcelona's directors came to speak with us. They said that United had made an offer, but that they didn't have any interest in accepting it," Neymar Sr. said in October. "We also said that we didn't want to and the matter ended there."
Real Madrid, who also made a strong push to acquire Neymar in 2013 before Santos eventually shipped him to FC Barcelona, are still aching to bring the Brazilian national team captain to Bernabeu.
According to Sport, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has been trying to get a meeting with Neymar Sr. to talk about a possible transfer deal but his recent attempts were unsuccessful.
Neymar is proving why big-money teams in Europe are interested in him, as he has already netted 14 goals and tallied five assists in 13 Spanish La Liga games this season.
