Bing Top Search Terms for 2015 Include High Profile Women
Internet users searched for a large variety of topics in 2015, but the search engine Bing tried to find the most popular searches of the year. Many of the searches included celebrities and athletes, with searches for women greatly increasing in the past year.
Caitlyn Jenner was the top searched celebrity in 2015, according to Bing Trends. Jenner was formerly known as Bruce Jenner, before publicly transitioning to a female in 2015.
Her prime-time interview with "20/20" about gender identity, along with her acceptance speech for the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYS, helped her surpass family member Kim Kardashian as the top celebrity searched on Bing. Kardashian took the fifth spot.
Right behind Jenner among the celebrities most searched was Miley Cyrus. The pop star had many wild costumes and crazy pictures from her concerts, sparking the interest of web searchers.
Women athletes surged on the Most Athletes Searched list, with Serena Williams and Ronda Rousey both earning top ten spots. UFC fighter Rousey had an excellent year on the Internet, marked by a high profile loss against Holly Holm. Rousey was the second most searched athlete on Bing. Williams was the sixth most searched athlete on Bing, but the most searched tennis player.
The top news story of the year, according to Bing, was the Paris attacks and ISIS. The second most searched news story was the European Union refugee crisis.
Sports fans on Bing considered the New England Patriots Super Bowl victory over the Seattle Seahawks the biggest sports moment of the year. In second place was American Pharoah's Triple Crown victory in horse racing.
Newer celebrities who are rising in fame appeared on the Celebrities on the Rise in 2015 list. Bindi Irwin was the top searched new celebrity, followed by Ariel Winter and Kylie Jenner.
