'Rise of the Tomb Raider' Just Got Grittier With New Endurance Mode, Two More DLCs Slated For Next Year
Microsoft has announced that the first "Rise of the Tomb Raider" DLC, a new experience called Endurance Mode, is now available to download.
"Fire takes fuel, cold kills the unprepared, food restores health, but everything must be caught, collected, or crafted," reads the DLC's product listing on Xbox's online store. "You start with nothing and must find everything. Challenge friends to your longest survival run and battle to the top of the leaderboards for the title of Ultimate Survivor."
In Endurance Mode, players attempt to survive as long as possible in the harsh wilderness, which they should be familiar by now from playing the base game. The new content increases the difficulty by making gameplay more practical and realistic. For instance, Lara must first collect fuel before she can start a fire. If she doesn't have fire, especially in extreme conditions, she will die from hypothermia.
Other changes include Lara's health not regenerating when she takes a hit. The only way for her to heal is if she eats food that needs to be hunted first . Players will plunge into Endurance Mode with essentially nothing at their disposal. To succeed, they must learn to use the game's crafting system effectively.
Endurance Mode also has a new outfit and weapon for Lara. The expansion pack retails for $10. Check out the video embedded below from YouTuber "2punkrock4you" to learn more about the new DLC.
GameRant pointed out that there's not much to do in "Rise of the Tomb Raider" once the base game is finished, making Endurance Mode a welcome addition to the experience. It should provide a fresh challenge to those who have already mastered the core experience. Its difficulty and hyper realism could prove to be interesting for diehard "Tomb Raider" fans.
Endurance Mode is the first post-release from the game's season pass. Further expansions for "Rise of the Tomb Raider" will include "Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch" and "Cold Darkness Awakened." The former will be available in early 2016 while the latter will arrive a few months later.
It is still unclear what "Cold Darkness Awakened" will entail. From what is known about it thus far, it seems the DLC will introduce some sort of Horde Mode to the game, maybe one that includes online multiplayer.
"Rise of the Tomb Raider" released as a timed-exclusive for Xbox One and Xbox 360 on Nov. 10. Microsoft said the sequel to the 2013 reboot has done well, though no official sales numbers have been announced. The game will be available on PlayStation 4 and PC sometime 2016.
