As the New Year arrives many shows will end and new shows will begin, leaving many viewers with several options. The following is a list of the top five shows that should not be missed in the new year.

1. "Downton Abbey"

One of the most beloved shows is coming to an end, and it all starts in January. The sixth season to the award-winning show will begin in January, a month after having premiered in Europe. The new season will see all of the beloved characters and will show how each of their storylines comes to a conclusion. Created by Julian Fellowes, the series will continue to chronicle the Crawley family. For avid followers, this should be a nostalgic experience and a rewarding one as well.

2. "Legends of Tomorrow"

For fans of "The Flash" and "Arrow," the CW is bringing yet another comic adaptation packed with many beloved superheroes in 2016. "Legends of Tomorrow" has an all-star cast and from the first clips, this show seems like it will be as action packed as the other two. Additionally, it looks like the CW will try and unify the DC worlds and continue to expand its superhero universe. Reviews are not out yet, but based on their first two shows, this should not be missed.

3. "PBS's Great Performances at the Metropolitan Opera"

Perhaps a curveball on this list, but every January, PBS and the Met Opera team up to broadcast the latest HD performances from the stage of the famed opera house. This season 11, performances will be broadcast throughout the year on PBS and will feature some of today's great opera singers. For opera lovers, this is a great way to experience opera if there aren't any theaters nearby. As for those who've never seen an opera, this is a way to discover the art form.

4. "Telenovela"

Eva Longoria is back and this time she stars in a comedy that takes audiences behind the scenes of a telenovela. In the show, Longoria plays a diva whose off-camera theatrics rivals the drama of her on-screen story lines. The new show seeks to bring Latino audiences to NBC, as it stars a number of renowned soap opera actors and brings home many of the Latin American themes audiences have come to recognize. Already having released its first episode, this new series looks to be a riot and one that is enjoyable for the whole family.

5. "Shades of Blue"

The cop drama is one of the most beloved genres in TV and many great stars have surged in these shows. As a result, Jennifer Lopez is taking a break from comedies and digging into a gritty character who's forced to work in the FBI's anti-corruption task force, while also struggling to raise her daughter. From the trailer, Lopez looks like she gives one her best performances in years and shows the singer-turned-actress in a brand new facet of her career.
