Just four episodes into its run on Syfy, "The Expanse" has done so well for the cable network that it has officially been renewed for season 2.
According to Deadline, the show has not only been renewed for a Season 2, but it has been ordered for more episodes as well. Season 1 will give fans the first 10 episodes of the space opera themed show. Season 2 will be extended to 13 episodes and feature the expanded storyline inherent from the source material by author James S.A. Corey.
Fans of the show have really locked on to and pushed the show to new heights for the network. Its early season success and ensuing expansion in the ratings has lead to the new season order. But fans of Corey have locked onto it from the beginning and the expanding fan base is growing with a cult-like status.
Dave Howe, President, Syfy and Chiller, made a statement about the show and he seems quite pleased and excited about what's to come for it.
"'The Expanse' is firing on all cylinders creatively, building a passionate fan base among viewers and critics alike, and delivering on Syfy's promise of smart, provocative science fiction entertainment," Howe said.
The series is set 200 years in the future, a time when human beings have expanded through the solar system and colonized other planets. The sci-fi theme is only a part of the story, as plots to destabilize the expansion and the colonies have been hatched and several people are considered key players in the story.
Thomas Jane plays the lead role of Joe Miller, who is a hardened detective on the show and somewhat streetwise, or in this case, "spacewise," to the angles certain characters play in order to deceive. His unique skills combine with other characters who are both friend and foe, driving the storyline further.
The second half of Season 1 comes back on Jan. 5, 2016. Season 2 is expected to premiere on the network in early 2017.
