Google Glass Launch, News, and Update: User Attacked In San Francisco, Wearables Stock Declines As Elitism & Privacy Concerns Hamper Release
A tech journalist named Kyle Russell was walking through the streets of San Francisco when a woman suddenly attacked him. His Google Glass was ripped off his face, and then the woman started running while yelling "Glass." This most recent attack in San Francisco has paved the way for more debates over the safety of Google Glass. This modern gadget has been under scrutiny and legal battles since it was introduced. The attack yesterday will most likely not help Google in its campaign to make this product suitable for mass release.
The $1,500 wearable computer that Russell had was unexpectedly removed from his face. He tried to catch up with the woman, but before he was able to catch up, the device was smashed to the ground. The woman then vanished. This incident made him realize that the woman was trying to more or less make a statement against Google Glass.
Before the attack, Russell was covering the demonstration being made against Google by over 100 protesters. Although it was for a different issue, the attack has placed Google in an even harder situation. Most people view this as a gadget for the elite. It has also fueled anger due to privacy concerns.
According to Russell, he decided to wear the device since his bag was already full. Although it has not yet been made available to the public, the device was already up for release by invitation and special orders. Russell said that if someone has the impression that anyone who wears the device is flaunting it or trying to brag about it, then he is afraid of wearing it again. Google is still testing the waters before going on a full release later this year.
