WWE Royal Rumble Update: Roman Reigns Talks About Title Defense, Blasts McMahon Family
Roman Reigns is set to defend his WWE World Heavyweight championship at the 30-Man Royal Rumble on Jan. 24 at Orlando, Florida. Vince McMahon made the announcement after Reigns retained his title against Sheamus with the WWE chairman as guest referee at the main event of the latest episode of Monday Night RAW.
WWE.com posted an exclusive interview with Reigns talking to Renee Young about The Authority and his chances of retaining his WWE title at the Royal Rumble.
"The McMahon family is trying to burn me down Renee, but all they're really doing is firing me up. That's good because in the Royal Rumble match it is one vs. all. And when the smoke clears and the dust settles, I will be the last one standing as champion. Believe that," Reigns said.
The major change in the WWE's first pay-per-view of the year created a buzz that has not been seen in the event for the past few years. It is the first time since the Royal Rumble 1992 that the winner will become the WWE champion.
Daily DDT noted that a win by Reigns will be a good way to really cement his status as the next face of the company, especially because he has been getting over the crowd since November because of the great booking by the creative. However, there is a very big chance that he won't get a great reaction considering that he will win the Royal Rumble for the second year in a row.
Reigns was booed out of the building after winning the Rumble last year even with The Rock's presence and endorsement. Only Hulk Hogan, Shawn Michaels, and Steve Austin have won two years in a row, and there are still question marks over Reigns' popularity that WWE can't ignore.
According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer via What Culture, there is the possibility of Triple H participating at the Rumble and win the WWE title. He noted that Mr. McMahon said that Triple H will get his revenge on Reigns and he won't see it coming.
A WrestleMania 32 match between "The Game" and "The Big Dog" is a good option for the WWE as fans will surely cheer for Reigns. Bleacher Report also suggested that Brock Lesnar could win the Rumble and have a rematch with Reigns while the bout against Triple H happening at the Fastlane PPV in February.
There is also a possibility of having a completely different outcome like a dark horse winning the WWE title that could shake things up leading to WrestleMania 32.
