MLB: Washington Nationals, Kansas City Royals Among Teams Interested in Gerardo Parra
Outfielder Gerardo Parra is not one of the biggest names in the free agent market that still have Yoenis Cespedes, Alex Gordon, and Justin Upton available. Many teams view him as a backup plan if those big names get signed, but Parra's market is reportedly getting active with the Washington Nationals and Kansas City Royals among the interested teams.
According to MLB.com, the Nationals have been in contact with 28-year-old as they are looking to add a center fielder. The belief inside the organization is that 24-year-old Michael Taylor is not ready to be an everyday outfielder evidenced by the Nationals' pursuit of Jason Heyward last month.
Washington is also interested in re-signing Denard Span who is currently recovering from hip surgery and has started his rehabilitation by jumping over hurdles. Current Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo was the first to sign Parra to a professional contract back in 2004 while he was with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Kansas City has been linked to Parra as he will be a good, inexpensive replacement if Alex Gordon signs with a different team. The Venezuelan is as good as Gordon defensively, winning the Gold Glove twice already, but does not have the same power on his bat.
FanSided suggested that the Royals are not a good fit for Parra because of his weakness against left-handed pitching. He also struggles playing against American League teams having played with National League's Diamondbacks and Milwaukee Brewers in the first six seasons of his career.
The Colorado Rockies are also emerging as an interested party as the rumors of their outfield fire sale persists. The Rockies have reportedly put all their three starting outfielders Carlos Gonzalez, Charlie Blackmon, and Corey Dickerson on the trading block, per Mile High Sports.
However, the report also noted the risk of signing Parra before trading any of their outfielders. The Rockies have many more talented players that can play the outfield like Brandon Barnes and Kyle Parker as well as prospects Raimel Tapia and David Dahl. Colorado may be better off signing a starting pitcher rather than an outfielder.
The 28-year-old Parra started his career with Arizona in 2009 and winning the Gold Glove with the team in 2011 and 2013. He was traded to the Brewers at the deadline in 2014 before playing 55 games with the Baltimore Orioles to end the 2015 season.
He has a career batting average of .277 with 920 hits, 56 home runs, and 616 strikeouts. Parra is also a durable player having played more than 130 games the past six seasons, per Baseball Reference.
