CM Punk UFC Debut: Dana White Looking at 1-0 New Jersey Native as Possible Opponent
UFC President Dana White might have found the first opponent for the former wrestler and current MMA rookie, Phil "CM Punk" Brooks. The UFC management is hopeful that Brooks will be ready to for his debut, possibly taking place by mid-year.
While in his trip in the East Coast filming his "Dana White: Looking for a Fight" YouTube show, the UFC president was shocked when a New Jersey fighter told him that he wants to fight CM Punk. The fighter's name is Mickey Gall, who just turned pro winning his professional debut in front of White via submission to take his record to 1-0.
"Hey Dana White, I don't know if CM Punk has an opponent but I would love to fight that man," Gall told White as quoted by MMA Junkie. The 23-year-old welterweight has a 2-0 amateur record and is training under the Miller brothers, Jim and Dan.
According to FOX Sports, White still has no decision on signing Gall to a contract, but he did say that he is interested in the young prospect. The UFC president said back in December that CM Punk's first opponent will be coming from his new web-show that also features former Welterweight champion, Matt Serra.
Many people have already challenged the 37-year-old MMA rookie including welterweight John "Doomsday" Howard, recently retired MMA fighter Cathal Pendred, FOX Sports MMA writer Elias Cepeda, "The Green Power Ranger" Jason David Frank and former NFL linebacker Shawn Merriman. However, both Daniel Cormier and Kenny Florian are very worried about Punk's development especially after suffering a shoulder injury in training.
Brooks is currently training under Duke Roufus of Roufusports in Milwaukee, where former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis, welterweight contender Tyron Woodley and ONE FC Welterweight champion Ben Askren trains. Roufus responded to Cormier and Florian at a recent interview on Sirius XM.
"I just left him at the gym and he had one of the best sessions he's had in training so far. I respect those guys a lot, they're great analysts but they don't see the work that we're doing daily and fans, they're going to find out some stuff this year about CM Punk," Roufus said.
White has also said in previous interviews that the possible date for Punk's debut is at UFC 200 on July 9 at Las Vegas, Nevada. The event is rumored to be having a possible comeback fight by Georges St-Pierre, a Conor McGregor fight, and the Holly Holm vs. Ronda Rousey rematch, making it the biggest event in the history of MMA.
