WWE SmackDown Spoilers, Results for Jan 7, 2016: John Cena Opens Show; Dean Ambrose Defends Title
"WWE SmackDown" will officially air on the USA Network on Jan. 7, and John Cena will open the show. Although airing on Thursday nights, the show will still tape its episodes on Tuesdays.
Cena opened the show and wanted to challenge United States Champion Alberto Del Rio for the title. Del Rio and refused to comply with Cena's request. And that was all for Cena's appearance on "SmackDown." Del Rio, however, stayed as he will compete in a non-title match against fellow a Latino, Kalisto.
In what was said to be a great match, Kalisto won. With Kalisto's Lucha Dragon partner Sin Cara on the injury list, it appears the WWE is beginning to push Kalisto as a viable singles competitor.
It was time for a MizTV segment, which led to the appearance of WWE Tag Team Champions The New Day (Big E, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods). The four WWE superstars were later confronted by Dolph Ziggler, Goldust, Neville and R-Truth, which eventually led to an eight-man tag-team match. New Day and The Miz lost.
WWE Divas Champion Charlotte had a "Monday Night Raw" rematch against Becky Lynch. The difference at "SmackDown," however, is that the WWE Divas Championship was on the line. While Lynch won the match at "Raw," Charlotte won at "SmackDown" to retain the championship.
It was main event time and another title was on the line as Dean Ambrose defended his Intercontinental Championship against former champion Kevin Owens. Unfortunately for fans wanting a new champion crowned at the inaugural "SmackDown" on the USA Network, the title match ended in double count out. As a result, and by default, Ambrose retains the Intercontinental Championship.
The WWE Divas Championship and Intercontinental Championship matches comes after the WWE World Heavyweight Championship was defended on last Monday's "Raw," where Roman Reigns retained his title against Sheamus. Reigns did not make an appearance on "SmackDown." The only titles not defended this week were the United States Championship and Tag Team Championship.
"WWE SmackDown" airs weekly on Thursdays on the USA Network.
