'Fast and Furious 8' Planning to Shoot in Cuba, More Details & Spoilers Inside
"Fast and Furious" has always been on the cutting edge of technology and adrenaline-pumping stunts, and now the team is itching for a chance to film in the country of Cuba after the trade embargo was lifted in 2015.
According to a report from Variety, Universal is very interested in setting the eighth installment of "Fast and Furious" in Cuba. The studio revealed that the team has even already visited the country to take a look at possible locations, although the move is still in the "exploratory phase" and would still likely take some time to approve and finalize.
A spokeswoman for Universal told Variety, "Universal Pictures is currently in the process of seeking approval from the United States and Cuban governments to explore shooting a portion of the next installment of the 'Fast & Furious' series in Cuba."
It would certainly be the biggest production to land in the country as very few have ever attempted to use Cuba as a setting before. As the countries seek to repair relations between US and Cuba and the embargo was lifted, there have been several projects that have made the trip including an episode of Conan O'Brien's late-night show, plans for season five of "House of Lies" and Vanity Fair's shoot with musician Rihanna and photographer Annie Leibovitz.
"Cuba is a land that many know about, but few have seen," John Kavulich, senior policy adviser to the U.S.-Cuba Trade and Economic Council, explained. "These productions are hoping to capitalize on the increased interest in Cuba."
He added, ""The Cuban government is supportive and the U.S. government is supportive. Licenses for television and motion picture productions are bilateral issues and they will receive bilateral support."
This additional backdrop for the film is only one of the factors that are set to make the new "Fast and Furious" film another hit. The franchise's strong cast plays a huge part in ensuring the success of the movies and a report from Movie News Guide revealed that action stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Jason Statham are all expected to return for "Fast and Furious 8".
The series is showing no signs of stepping on the brakes anytime soon. In fact, it seems the team is only picking up steam as they go along with plans for prequels and spin-offs in the works with Universal.
Last year, Diesel confirmed the future of the franchise to Variety saying, "We've written out story lines for various characters. We've been playing with it for a long time. It's a very rich property and we're committed to treating it with a lot of class."
"Fast and Furious 8" is set to debut on Apr. 17, 2017.
