Are we alone in the universe? The debate as to whether Earth is the only planet that harbors intelligent life is still largely unsolved, but everyone has their opinion. As far as the British government is concerned, they haven't seen any convincing evidence yet.

The UK's Ministry of Defense has released what it says are all of the documents it has collected over the years pertaining to extraterrestrial life and sightings of unidentified flying objects, or UFO's. The briefing they released in conjunction with the documentation was pretty clear.

"No UFO sighting reported to [MoD] has ever revealed anything to suggest an extra-terrestrial presence or military threat to the UK," continuing, "there is no defense benefit in [MoD] recording, collating, analyzing or investigating UFO sightings."

The main reason for the government's dumping of this otherwise sensitive information has little to do with a political agenda or the honoring of UFO believers' requests for full transparency. Rather, it was simply a matter of expediency.

"The level of resources diverted to this task is increasing in response to a recent upsurge in reported sightings, diverting staff from more valuable defense-related activities," stated the memo.

Despite this disclosure from the Ministry of Defense, there are certainly still many who will say that the government could still very well be withholding information from the public. For some, however, this latest disclosure was enough to say with confidence that at least in the U.K., aliens are not an issue.

"The last pieces of the puzzle have finally been revealed with this insight into the last days of the UFO desk. These files spell out clearly why the MoD decided - after 60 years -- it no longer needed to keep tabs on sightings, even those made by 'credible' people such as police officers and pilots," said UFO expert David Clarke. "The last files from the UFO desk are now all in the public domain. People at home can read them and draw their own conclusions about whether 'the truth' is in these files or still out there."
