MLS: Los Angeles FC Reveals Crest and Colors, Will Ferrell Part of Ownership Group
Major League Soccer's latest expansion team to debut in 2018, Los Angeles FC, unveiled their crest, logo, and colors in a press conference at the Union Station on Jan. 7. Actor and comedian Will Ferrell was also announced as one of the two new part-owners of LAFC along with Riot Games co-founder and CEO, Brandon Beck, per ESPN FC.
"This is not a joke. I'm actually a member of this fine ownership group. I've never been part-owner of anything though I'm still part-owner of an '84 Toyota Camry with my brother," Ferrell jokingly said.
Many supporters of LAFC were present including the Black Army 1850, which originally was affiliated with defunct MLS team, Chivas USA. Some of its members came from Palmdale, California which is 60 miles away from downtown Los Angeles.
"It's thrilling to see a turnout like this. The fact that we have people from Palmdale is impressive. If we're already reaching out to Palmdale, you know we're in good shape," Ferrell added.
The 48-year-old soccer fan joins a long list of part-owners of LAFC including ex-Dodgers player Nomar Garciaparra, Mandalay Entertainment CEO Peter Gruber, USWNT legend Mia Hamm, YouTube co-founder Chad Hurley, Lakers great Magic Johnson, former NBA executive Tom Penn, and 16 others. The club is majority owned by Malaysian billionaire, Vincent Tan and American venture capitalist, Henry Nguyen.
"From the outside, it seems cumbersome. I tell you what, it's been a joy to have such a collection of incredibly successful, experienced, talented people contributing their ideas, and they're finding ways to integrate those into our process. I'll say for now there probably won't be any more new owners, but there's no promise," Nguyen commented on the number of club owners.
According to MLS.com, LAFC's crest was copied from the Seal of the City of Los Angeles while the wordmark is based on architect Richard Neutra's typeface used in buildings in downtown Los Angeles. The colors of pitch black and California gold symbolizes Hollywood's glamor and urban setting.
The monogram is incorporated with a wing which is a play on the LA's nickname of "The City of Angels," and its four blades stands for the club's four pillars and the city's foundation day of Sep. 4, 1781. All of it was designed by Matthew Wolff, a graphic designer for Nike.
The club will play in the MLS in 2018 in a new 22,000-seat stadium near the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. It is part of the $250-million complex center that covers 15 acres of land that will also have a conference center, restaurants, and a soccer museum, per the club's official website.
