‘Uncharted 4’ to Mark the Demise of Nathan Drake? Naughty Dog Gives Hint of the End
"Uncharted" has been on an impressive run for Naughty Dog, but the end is coming and it might be sooner than the long-time fans expected.
In an interview with The Sun, the game's creative director Neil Druckmann hinted that the end may be near for the "Uncharted" series' beloved hero Nathan Drake.
"We've been with this character for so long," Druckmann pointed out. Fan support and performance remain very strong, from game sales to toys like the Pop Vinyl figure of the protagonist on Game Stop. Still, the executive explained that there's a possibility that the team exit early to avoid running the game to the ground and past its peak.
"He's at the height of his popularity, so it's not a good business decision," he continued. "But I feel like the best way to honor him is to go out on top, to finish his story. Whether that's it for 'Uncharted'? I don't know. At the end of the day Sony owns 'Uncharted' and they can do whatever they want."
Druckmann added, "But with the end of this story, it will be really hard to do a sequel with Nathan Drake."
The clue sounds ominous; after all, what could be a bigger obstacle from a sequel than the demise of the game's main character? Still, before Naughty Dog even begins thinking of their next step, they're focusing their energies on the upcoming installment, "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End".
"The heart of this is Nathan Drake's struggle: how do you balance your relationship with your family and friends and your passion, the thing you're willing to dedicate your life to and make big sacrifices for," the creative director said. "Nathan Drake has dealt with obsession his entire life and we've seen it hurt his relationship. ... That's what we want to get into. Because maybe you can't have both. Maybe you can't have your family and that passion and the obsession."
There's plenty to look forward to in the new game from Drake's story arc to new characters like his brother Sam and a mercenary called Nadine Rose. Moving forward, another game from the Naughty Dog team is certainly a possibility -- perhaps even within the same universe as their best-selling action adventure.
"Maybe there'll be a prequel, maybe it will be a different character, I don't know," Druckmann said. Then he added, "But this is the end for Nathan Drake."
"Uncharted 4: A Thief's End" for PlayStation 4 is slated to be released on April 26.
