Guillermo del Toro to Adapt ‘Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark’
Fans of the horror and young adult fiction are about to get a sweet surprise, when horror aficionado Guillermo del Toro tries his hand at a new adaptation of the horror book series "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark."
According to Deadline, del Toro has found success in the past with book adaptations. He coauthored a series of novels titled "The Strain" and executive produced a TV series based on the books. While his next adaptation will be based on original material written by someone else, fans can still expect the film to reflect his unique vision.
The movie will be based on the entire book trilogy by Alvin Schwartz that started with "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark." The series was illustrated by Stephen Gammell, and the entire trilogy went on to massive success in the young adult market with a strong cult following.
Although the books were originally marketed toward children back in 1984, when the first was published, it soon joined the American Library Association's list of banned books in the United States. The short stories in the books were said to be too scary for children.
However, rather than hurt the book, the infamous ban led to an increase in sales. It became more popular than ever, outpacing all estimates for the series and eventually going on to become a pop-culture phenomenon.
The immense success of the trilogy and its controversial early days have inspired del Toro. He is also said to be a big fan of the book series and owns several of the original artwork pieces from it.
Reports indicate del Toro will be coming on as a producer for the film, but he may also be directing as well, though there could be a scheduling conflict that could prevent him from doing so. He has several other projects at the moment, including the "Fantastic Voyage" remake and a sequel to "Pacific Rim."
There has been no word yet on which of the short stories he will be incorporating into the film or what the overall plot will be.
