Cheryl Fernandez-Versini to Wait Three Years Before Filing for Divorce from Jean-Bernard
Recent updates about Cheryl Fernandez-Versini and husband Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini's divorce claimed that the singer has to wait three years before filing for separation. This is said to be the law on Jean-Bernard's home, island of Mustique, where the couple exchanged wedding vows.
Mustique Island is said to be governed by Grenadine law, which strictly prohibits divorce unless a couple has already been married for three years. Mirror UK shared that only in cases of "exceptional hardship" does the law allow divorce. So, Cheryl and Jean-Bernard have over a year to wait before they can officially file for divorce since they have only been married for 18 months.
"The only way of circumventing the three-year rule is if you can prove exceptional circumstances. The question, in that case, is what exactly constitutes 'exceptional'"" Stephen Williams, a partner in St. Vincent-based law firm Williams & Williams, said.
Williams said these exemptions in the rule include divorce caused by adultery or some sort of abuse. However, in the case of Cheryl and Jean-Bernard's reported amicable separation, they would have to wait after three years to file for divorce.
"It doesn't matter if you're the Queen herself - the law is the law," Williams further said about the marital laws in Mustique Island.
Cheryl and Jean-Bernard have yet to officially and publicly confirm their split. The "X-Factor UK" judge has remained private about her married life despite reports claiming she and her husband have already separated five months ago.
However, Cheryl's friend and former Girls Aloud co-singer Sarah Harding may have already confirmed the divorce. Harding was asked about how Cheryl is doing amid the divorce reports during a guest appearance on "Loose Women" last week.
Her interview on the show, which is posted on YouTube, shows Harding discussing about Cheryl's married life with Jean-Bernard. She revealed that she has texted Cheryl asking her if she is okay.
Harding added that the "Parachute" hitmaker will be alright and that she'll bounce back because she is strong. Her statements somehow confirmed Cheryl's divorce with Jean-Bernard.
Factual details about the couple's reported divorce have yet to be revealed. However, Cheryl is not letting her marriage troubles dull her social life.
As a matter of fact, the 32-year-old singer was recently spotted out in public to support the opening of a friend's new kickboxing gym. She is also expected to be at Kimberly Walsh's wedding in Barbados later this month, Closer informed.
