Jennifer Lawrence to Play Fidel Castro's Lover Marita Lorenz in New Film
Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence has been confirmed to play Cuban leader Fidel Castro's former lover, Marita Lorenz, in a new film from Sony Pictures.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film, called "Marita," was pitched by "American Hustle" writer Eric Warren Singer. The film does not focus on Castro, but rather on his lover, who was later part of an assassination attempt on the leader by the CIA.
The film will detail how Lorenz, a German-born American, met and fell in love with Castro at the age of 19 in 1959. It will then follow the events that led to her later joining the anti-communist movement in the United States.
While the movie will be a romantic drama, it is sure to include plenty of conspiracy and political debate. Lorenz, who was imprisoned in a concentration camp as a young girl, was not only connected to Castro. She also claimed to have had an affair with a Venezuelan dictator and to have been involved in the John F. Kennedy assassination.
The details of her life have been documented in two autobiographies, "Marita: One Woman's Extraordinary Tale of Love and Espionage from Castro to Kennedy" and "Lieber Fidel - Mein Leben, meine Liebe, mein Verrat."
The film was acquired by Sony, but only after a bidding war with studios like Fox, Lionsgate, Paramount, Universal and Warner Bros., who all shared interest, reported Variety.
The 1999 television film, "My Little Assassin," was also based on the Lorenz's life.
The film has no director or official release date yet, but Matt Tolmach, Scott Mednick, and Andre Rouleau are confirmed as producers on the project. Lawrence will also serve as a producer.
This will be the second time that the 25-year-old stars in a film about a real-life person. She is currently nominated for an Academy Award for her role in "Joy," which tells the story of Joy Mangano, the inventor of the Miracle Mop and a self-made millionaire.
Lawrence also recently wrapped up another project with Sony, the sci-fi film "Passengers." The movie also stars Chris Pratt, Michael Sheen and Laurence Fishburne.
