Jorge Sampaoli has officially resigned as the Chilean National Team head coach according to USA Today.

The move comes as a huge surprise to many considering Chilean soccer is at its highest point ever. Chile won the 2015 FIFA Copa America over Argentina and Lionel Messi last year. Currently Chile is ranked No. 5 in the entire world and No. 2 in CONMEBOL, both the highest rankings in national team history. Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay will always be powerhouses, but you could very well make the case that Chile is the top soccer squad in all of South America.

Everything should be good then, right?

Unfortunately, disagreements with management and the Football Federation of Chile led to a split. Sampaoli was also not very fond that his contract details were made public. The 55-year-old head coach has been in rumors to be the new Chelsea manager, possibly after this English Premier League season. Sampaoli also felt disrespected by management.

Sampaoli has never coached in La Liga, the EPL or the Bundesliga. Many are somewhat skeptical on whether or not he can coach in the biggest soccer leagues while others feel he deserves a chance. As for Chile, they have not yet named a new manager, and the position is presently vacant. Pep Guardiola has already said he will be stepping down from Bayern Munich after this Bundesliga season, and a few think Sampaoli could be a good fit. Chilean middle fielder, Arturo Vidal, is one of the best middle fielders in the world, and he has been managed by Sampaoli for the last four years at the national level.

Interestingly, the last three consecutive Chile managers have all hailed from Argentina, Chile's fierce rival. The last Chilean-born manager was Juvenal Olmos who was hired in 2003.

Even with all this drama, the future looks brighter than ever for Chile. They will be competing in their first ever FIFA Confederations Cup in 2017, and you can bet they will have a strong appearance at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
