The camera on the new Galaxy S7 could be downgraded to 12 megapixels, according to online leaks of the phone's specifications.

As the Mobile World Congress approaches, rumors are flying about what hardward and software Samsung will feature on the new Galaxy device, which the company is expected to announce at the event.

Along with the 12MP camera, the Galaxy S7 is set to have a 5.1-inch screen, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage, TechRadar reports.

Specs Leaked

The phone's specs were revealed on Chinese social media site Weibo. The report indicates that the phone has been benchmark tested through AnTuTu running Samsung's own Exynos 8890 processor. This contradicts the initial expectation that Samsung would use Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 820 processor.

Still, the big change from the Galaxy S6 to the Galaxy S7 appears to be the camera. The camera in the Galaxy S7 has been benchmark tested at just 12MP, down from 16MP in the Galaxy S6.

Megapixel Decrease

Megapixels are not everything for a camera. The Apple iPhone is one example of a low megapixel camera that takes excellent photos.

Apple has always kept their cameras at relatively low megapixel counts. Apple stuck with an 8 MP camera all the way through the iPhone 6 and finally upgraded to 12MP with the iPhone 6s. Even with the low megapixel counts, iPhone cameras are regarded as some of the best in the smartphone industry.

However, the Galaxy S6 takes excellent photos, so shifting to a different sensor in the Galaxy S7 is a little worrisome to the smartphone world.

If Samsung does drop the Galaxy S7's camera down to 12MP, they will likely make up for it by adding features. They may make sure it takes quality low-light pictures and give it an autofocus.

Samsung is still in its testing phase of the Galaxy S7, so the 12MP camera could be just an initial trail. All may be made clear if the Galaxy S7 is announced as expected at MWC in Barcelona, which runs Feb. 22-25.
