As per E! News, Alek Keshishian, the music video's director, stated there's a different story behind the sultry music video. Keshishian emphasized that the meaning of the video goes beyond what is plain in sight, especially since they were going for depth through art.

Selena Gomez told E! News that she wanted to convey the message of living a double life when it comes to love, stating that there's more to it that just romance. Gomez then added that when girls would fall in love, they would often get blinded with their emotions, making it hard for them to separate fantasy from reality.

She then added that people would usually see love as a romantic getaway with the person they want to be with, but the moment that you would get into the relationship, its a totally different thing than what you are fantasizing about, "You get to see these images of what people think love is. It's theatrical, it's movie-like. And all of that you end up seeing ends up being a false reality on both ends. That's what I wanted it to feel like."
