What to Expect From Gina Rodriguez in 2016
Since she hit the scene in 2012 with her performance in "Filly Brown," Gina Rodriguez has become a face for Latinas making a difference on television. 2016 will be no different for the Puerto Rican-American actress.
During an interview with TVyNovelas, the actress dished about her hectic 2016 schedule and what fans can expect from the "Jane The Virgin" star.
New Films
2016 will be the year that Rodriguez will be on the big screen
Along with supporting roles in the films "Sticky Notes" and "Deepwater Horizon," the actress was recently confirmed by The Wrap to be starring in her biggest role to date in the film "Annihilation."
The actress, who will be working on "Annihilation" this year, attributed her film opportunities to her support system.
"I feel God, my family and my team have prepared me for this. I've always been with the same agent, Carlos Carreras, the best man in the world, which is also my brother and we have prepared for this trip steadily," she said.
Documenting Latino Issues
Another film project from the 31-year-old will come in the form of a documentary that will discuss a topic that is close to her heart.
The Latina will help bring light to the problems that Latinos in the United States deal with in terms of identity and the ideas that other have about them.
"It tells the story of Hispanics living here and the perception of this country. I am Puerto Rican, my parents are from Puerto Rico, but I was born in Chicago, Spanish is my second language. My parents did not want me to have that accent because they were ridiculed for it," she told TVyNovelas.
"Therefore, the way I was raised was due to their experiences-and I am a small part of the 55 million who live in the United States...there is a large spectrum between Latinos and the idea we have of them in the United States, I want to start to break that," she added.
Rodriguez, who although beloved by many, had to defend herself last August and stood up against Instagram bullies criticizing her Spanish-language abilities.
Gina Rodriguez, The Author
The actress revealed she is currently in the middle of writing what will be her first book. According to Indie Wire, last June she announced the book would be about her father's advice.
The Latina hopes the book will be helpful to young people and she will only be writing about the things that she knows.
"I have a great desire that others can live in this state of mind in which I am now, because it reminds me every day about the way my father raised me, and this book will be a reminder for me," she said. "The book will be available this year and hopefully that will enable teenagers to live fully."
More "Jane The Virgin"
This one was pretty much expected. With her several nominations and historic Golden Globe win in 2015, there definitely will be more of Rodriguez playing everyone's favorite virgin, Jane Villanueva.
Between her popularity and the influence of the show on ideas of virginity, which she called "a great opportunity to turn something so unpopular into something popular," Rodriguez isn't going anywhere.
The series is currently airing its second season and Rodriguez often shares photos during filming on her Instagram account.
