Johnny Depp to Play Drug Lord in Crime Thriller 'Triple Frontier' After 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales' Filming Wraps Up
There are rumors that Johnny Depp will star in a new crime thriller movie, “Triple Frontier.” The “Pirates of the Caribbean” star is said to take on the role of a drug boss in the Paramount project.
Variety wrote that Depp recently garnered an SAG nomination for taking on the role of mobster Whitey Bulger in the film “Black Mass.” The actor has not confirmed his participation in “Triple Frontier,” but is said to be in talks for the starring position.
Depp was reportedly interested in the script when he found out that Kathryn Bigelow would direct the project. However, Bigelow has since been removed and J.C. Chandor has been slated to direct the film. It is still uncertain how Bigelow’s withdrawal will affect Depp’s decision. Mark Boal, Bigelow’s producing partner, serves as the scriptwriter. Charles Roven and Alex Garner of Atlas Entertainment will produce the film.
“Triple Frontier” has been in development for some time. ScreenRant wrote that the project suffered some delays due to the needed change in director and potential leading actors who withdrew. The story is set in the notorious border area between Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina where the Parana and Iguazu rivers meet, creating a triple frontier that is highly challenging to monitor and ideal for organized crime operations. The movie is expected to be a gritty version of the notorious underworld where Boal based his script on.
ScreenRant also cited how Depp can provide a unique take on the film, considering his ability to morph into any character. His range will certainly interest fans although the movie might still require the support of other known stars to become highly successful.
Variety stated that Tom Hanks and Will Smith were also offered roles in the crime thriller. However, Smith had to decline due to schedule conflicts with his next movie, “Collateral Beauty.” Hanks has not yet confirmed his participation.
Depp recently finished filming “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.” He has a number of movies set to launch in 2016 as well, including “Alice Through the Looking Glass” and “Yoga Hosers.” The actor has worked on drug-related projects before like “Blow” and “Once Upon a Time In Mexico.” Depp is represented by UTA.
Paramount has not yet commented on the upcoming project and Depp’s potential involvement. More updates and details on “Triple Frontier,” its cast and storyline are expected soon.
