The brother of Camilla Parker Bowles has died after falling outside a Manhattan bar and suffering a head injury.

Mark Shand, 62, the chairman of an elephant conservation charity, was in New York for a charity auction at Sotheby's.

Camilla and her husband, Charles, Prince of Wales, are "utterly devastated" by the death of her brother, according to The Associated Press.

According to the New York Police Department, Shand arrived at the Gramercy Park Hotel's Rose Bar before 1 a.m. Wednesday with a relative. He reportedly went out to smoke a cigarette around 2:30 a.m. then fell backward as he tried to re-enter the hotel through a revolving door.

He was then taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:25 a.m. The official cause of death has not yet been determined.

Shand was known as a travel writer and conservationist. He authored several books, including "River Dog: A Journey Down the Brahmaputra" and "Elephant Tales."

British royal officials at Clarence House said Camilla, Prince Charles and the rest of the royal family are "utterly devastated by this sudden and tragic loss."

"Mark Shand was a man of extraordinary vitality, a tireless campaigner and conservationist whose incredible work through The Elephant Family and beyond remained his focus right up until his death," an official statement read.

Sotheby's also said it was "deeply saddened" by his death and was honored to help him raise money for conservation causes.

Police were at the hotel on Wednesday afternoon, looking at the locations of security cameras.

Representatives for the hotel did not immediately return a call from The Associated Press.

As of now, Camilla and Charles are still planning a tour of Canada next month.
