Boxing: Amir Khan Khan Believes Floyd Mayweather Is Afraid of Him
Amir Khan is still hoping that he will get a shot against Floyd Mayweather but the former world champion believes the now-retired boxing superstar is afraid of him.
Khan, who owns a 31-3 record with 19 knockout victories, will likely face newly-crowned World Boxing Council welterweight champion Danny Garcia later this year. And if he wins convincingly, the British boxing superstar is hoping that Mayweather will come out of retirement to face him.
"If I put a good beating on Danny Garcia and beat him, the Mayweather fight might be there for me," said Khan, who was recently named as the mandatory challenger to Garcia's WBC welterweight title.
However, Khan believes that Mayweather, who retired after winning against Andre Berto in September last year, is afraid of him. The 29-year-old Briton has been lobbying for a bout against Mayweather but was snubbed several times with the former pound-for-pound king picking to face Marcos Maidana, Manny Pacquiao and Berto.
"It just seems that Mayweather is afraid and doesn't want to fight me," Khan said. "He fought Berto in his last fight. No disrespect to Berto. Everyone was waiting for him to fight me, but he didn't want to fight me. I think people need to know that. People need to know that he's avoiding Amir Khan."
Khan, a former junior welterweight world champion, has not fought since scoring a unanimous decision win against Chris Algieri in May last year in Brooklyn, New York. The Bolton, England native recently declared that he is ready to face Garcia again, as he is aching to avenge his defeat to the Philadelphia native.
Garcia, who improved his record to 32-0 with 18 knockouts after winning against Robert Guerrero on Saturday, knocked Khan out in the fourth round of their world title fight in June 2012. The 27-year-old is confident he can beat Khan again but sounded uninterested in the proposed bout because of the Briton's long layoff.
"I don't have to fight nobody," Garcia told BoxingScene, when asked about his mandatory defense against Khan. "He's been inactive for I believe a year. I don't think that's a good idea to fight an active fighter after being inactive for over a year. But like I said, I beat him once and I can beat him again."
However, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman reiterated that Garcia should defend his welterweight title against Khan in his next fight. Sulaiman mentioned that the fight should take place in June, and insisted that Garcia will not be allowed to defend the title against another challenger.
