A drunken passenger on a Virgin Australia flight to Bali created a hijack scare Friday after the passenger tried to break into the cockpit.

The unruly passenger was arrested once the plane landed on the island of Bali, the Associated Press reports.

The airport was closed for two hours after the incident, forcing several flights to be diverted.

The passenger, an Australian citizen, reportedly "acted aggressively" and began pounding on the cockpit door before being restrained and handcuffed by the crew, police said.

Investigators said they had to wait for the passenger to become sober before they questioned him about the incident.

Maj. Gen. Benny Mokalu, the Bali police chief, told reporters that the individual began beating on the locked door of the cockpit, which prompted the pilot to issue an alert code to air traffic control. The crew were then able to restrain the passenger and put him in a seat at the back of the plane for the last hour of the flight to Bali.

Officials said the plane was directed to park at the end of the runway in case there were any weapons or explosives on the plane. Troops surrounded the plane once it landed.

"We immediately took appropriate security measures involving troops because the initial information that we got was that the plane was hijacked," said air force base commander Col. Sugiharto Prapto.

Prapto said the air force troops surrounded the plane then took the man into custody.

The plane, a Boeing 737-800, was carrying 137 passengers and seven crew members from Brisbane, Australia to Bali, which is a popular tourist spot for vacationing Australians.

The airline reports that no passengers or crew members were injured in the incident.
